Fragility Fractures
Fragility fractures, also known as osteoporotic fractures, are fractures that occur as a result of a fall from standing height or less. It is estimated that around 500,000 fragility fractures occur in Australia each year. This includes fractures of the hip, spine, wrist, and other bones. The incidence of fragility fractures is expected to increase in the coming years due to the aging of the population.
Fragility fractures can have serious consequences for the health and well-being of individuals, including decreased mobility, loss of independence, and an increased risk of mortality. They are a major public health problem and will have a significant and increasing impact on the healthcare system as the population ages.
Preventive measures, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, taking medications to strengthen bones, and reducing the risk of falls, can help to reduce the risk of fragility fractures.
A Fragility Fracture Registry
A national fragility fracture registry is a database that collects and stores information about fragility fractures. Fragility fractures, also known as osteoporotic fractures, are fractures that occur as a result of a fall from standing height or less. They are a common and serious health problem, particularly among older adults.
A national fragility fracture registry is an important tool for improving the care and treatment of individuals who have experienced a fragility fracture. It can provide valuable data on the incidence, causes, and outcomes of fragility fractures, which can be used to identify patterns and trends and to inform the development of strategies for preventing and managing these fractures.
In addition, a fragility fracture registry can help to identify gaps in care and opportunities for improvement in the treatment and management of fragility fractures. It can also be used to track the effectiveness of interventions and to monitor the quality of care being provided to individuals with fragility fractures.
Overall, a fragility fracture registry can play a valuable role in improving the health and well-being of individuals who have experienced a fragility fracture, and in helping to reduce the burden of these fractures on the healthcare system.
The Foundation
The Australian Fragility Fracture Foundation Limited (AFFF) is dedicated to raising awareness of fragility fractures and supporting research and education to advance the understanding and management of these fractures.
Our first step is to measure a key set of internationally endorsed outcome measures for Secondary Fracture Prevention programs through the Australian Fragility Fracture Registry. This will enable bench-marking of performance which will help improve the care of patient with fragility fractures.
Founded in 2021, the AFFF is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) from 07 Feb 2022. This means that donations to the AFFF are fully tax deductible for both individuals and companies, though we recommend getting specific advice from your tax agent or accountant.
We accept all donations, big or small. Every little bit helps.
Your Donation
Your donation will help the AFFF to continue its important work and make a real difference in the lives of those affected by fragility fractures.
Any contribution, big or small, will be greatly appreciated and will help us to achieve our vision of reducing the burden of fragility fractures in Australia.
Consumer Representative - $2,500 Annually
A consumer representative helps ensure the foundation meets its obligations to the community it hopes to serve. Representative are paid for their time and this donation would go to cover their costs.
